An authentic and sublime sound of West Africa is coming to the Apex in Bury St Edmunds on Wednesday March 4.

Malian musicians Trio Da Kali hail from a line of distinguished griots, the hereditary caste of specialist musical artisans.

The group will show its contemporary musical twist on an ancient tradition, demonstrating a more subtle sound from the continent.

The soaring vibrato vocals of Hawa Kassé Mady are the trio’s focal point, performing the songs she grew up with in griot musical centre Kela.

Group leader Lassana Diabaté showcases his virtuosic skills with solos on the 22-key balafon, andMamadou Kouyaté provides the bass line on West Africa’s oldest string instrument, the ngoni.

To book tickets call the box office on 01284 758000 or see www.theapex.co.uk.
