Chris Ingham previews the week’s best jazz gigs in the east (October 17-24).

Friday, October 17 – ART THEMEN: (Hunter Club, 8pm, £10. Details: www.headhunterslive.org) After three years, the UK saxophone legend returns to Jazz at the Hunter Club. Renowned for his mischievous musicality, Art transcends his early influences of Sonny Rollins and Dexter Gordon and is revered as one of jazz’s great individuals. DAMON BROWN QUINTET: (Stoke By Nayland Hotel, 8pm, £18. Details: fleecejazz.org.uk) Led by acclaimed trumpeter Damon Brown, this quintet deliver swinging, lyrical sounds from the top drawer. Featuring Fredrik Carlquist (tenor sax), Leon Greening (piano), Adam King (bass) and Marc Miralta (drums).

Saturday, October 18 – SIZZLING JAZZ & BLUES BAND: (Horringer Court Middle School, 7.30pm, £10 inc Ploughman’s Supper. Details 01284 764224) Fund-raiser for Bury St Edmunds Women’s Refuge featuring goodtime jazz with a band led by Val Sinclair and Pat Brandon.

Sunday, October 19 – GABRIELLE DUCOMBLE/GEORGIA MANCIO: (The Apex, 8pm, £12. Details: www.theapex.co.uk) An enchanting evening of French chanson, Argentinian tango, Brazilian bossa nova, Italian retro-pop, Chilean folk and more by two of the country’s leading singers. Featuring accordionist Vincenzo Titti Castrini, guitarist Luca Bosagin and pianist Chris Ingham. ANDREA VICARI QUARTET: (Fludyer Arms, Felixstowe, 7.30pm, free. Details: jazzeast.vpweb.co.uk) Composer/pianist Vicari leads a set of contemporary jazz and originals featuring Zak Barrett (sax), Rob Palmer (bass) and George Double (drums). ANDY BOWIE QUARTET: (Tram Shed, Cambridge, 8.30pm, free) Tenor saxophone-playing philosophy professor leads a quartet presenting a connoisseur’s choice from the modern jazz repertoire.

Monday, October 20 – JAZZ JAM: (The Fat Cat Brewery Tap, Norwich, 8.30pm, free. Details: jazzjam.org.uk) Established and friendly jam session led by bassist Brendan Youngs and guitarist Lee Vasey. All instrumentalists and singers welcome for sitting in.

Tuesday, October 21 – IAN BATEMEN: (The Cottage, Thorpe St Andrew, 8.30pm, £10. Details: www.norwichjazzclub.co.uk) Versatile trombonist with skills in the traditional, modern and funk genres joins the Norwich Jazz Club Trio featuring Simon Brown (piano), Ivars Galenieks (bass) and Brian McAllister (drums).

Wednesday, October 22 – PAUL HILL: (Lakeside, Lyng, 8pm, £10. Details: www.lakeside-jazz.com) Norwich-based guitarist and educator known for his fleet-fingered action and his father’s custom-built guitars examines standards and jazz classics with his own quartet featuring Simon Brown (piano), Andy Doyle (bass) and Cath Evans (drums).

Thursday, October 23 – SOLE BAY JAZZ BAND: (Maltings Pavilion, Ditchingham, 8pm, free. Info: 01986 896143) Residency for established and popular Dixieland band, featuring Ray Simmons (trumpet), Tim Densham (clarinet/sax), Ron Hockett (clarinet/saxophone), Alan Cugnoni (banjo/guitar), Tony Jullings (bass) and Craig Hipperson (drums).

Friday, October 24 – JAZZ AT THE MOVIES: (Stoke By Nayland Country Club, 8pm, £15. Details: www.dovbear.co.uk/fleece) Swinging sounds from the silver screen in the company of honey-toned singer Joanna Eden and award-winning saxophonist/clarinettist Alan Barnes plus Chris Ingham (piano), Arnie Somgyi (drums) and George Double (drums).
