Chris Ingham takes a look at the best of the jazz gigs around the East this week.

Friday, February 21 – RAY GELATO QUARTET: (Hunter Club, Bury, doors 7.30pm, music 8pm, £10. Details: headhunterslive.org) The great swing entertainer and leader of the Ronnie Scott’s-filling Ray Gelato Giants in a rare UK club appearance. Expect effervescent vocals and roaring, blues-soaked tenor saxophone, with Chris Ingham (piano), Rev Andrew Brown and George Double (drums). LAURA ZAKIAN: (Stoke By Nayland Hotel, 8pm, £15. Details: fleecejazz.org.uk) Showcasing songs from her latest album, Songs For Modern Lovers, smoky singer Zakian is joined by a stellar trio comprising Steve Lodder (piano), Simon Thorpe (bass) and Nic France (drums).

Sunday, February 23 – ALBERT GARZA TRIO: (The Fox, Bury, 7.15pm, free) Saxophone-led trio featuring Texan tenor Albert Garza (saxes) plus piano and bass. ANDY BOWIE QUARTET: (Tram Shed, Cambridge, 8.30pm, free) Tenor saxophone-playing philosophy professor leads a quartet presenting a connoisseur’s choice from the modern jazz repertoire.

Monday, February 24 – JAZZ JAM: (The Windmill, Knox Road, Norwich, 8.30pm, free. Details: jazzjam.org.uk) Established and friendly jam session led by bassist Brendan Youngs and guitarist Lee Vasey.

Tuesday, February 25 – ZOE FRANCIS: (The Cottage, Thorpe St Andrew, doors 7pm, music 8pm, £10. Details: norwichjazzclub.co.uk) Inspired by Carmen McCrae, Etta James and Blossom Dearie, singer Zoe Francis honed her skills in New York before settling in London. Accompanied by John Pearce, veteran of the international jazz scene, particularly the Scott Hamilton Quartet, plus Ivars Galenieks (bass) and Brian McAllister (drums).

Wednesday, February 26 – ERIKO ISHIHARA/COLIN OXLEY: (Lakeside, Lyng, 8pm, £10. Details: lakeside-jazz.com) Delicately swinging singer/pianist Ishihara is joined by her husband, the highly refined guitarist Colin Oxley plus Ivars Galenieks (bass) and Brian McAllister (drums).

Thursday, February 27 – SOLE BAY JAZZ BAND: (Maltings Pavilion, Ditchingham, 8pm, free. Info: 01986 896143) Residency for established and popular Dixieland band, featuring Ray Simmons (trumpet), Tim Densham (clarinet/sax), Ron Hockett (clarinet/saxophone), Alan Cugnoni (banjo/guitar), Tony Jullings (bass) and Craig Hipperson (drums).

Friday, February 28 – JOHN LAW’S BOINK!: (Stoke By Nayland Hotel, 8pm, £15. Details: fleecejazz.org.uk) Inventive pianist/composer Law has come up with something unusual with Boink, an electro-visual experience unlike anything else on the scene, featuring John Law (keyboards), Rob Palmer (guitar), Lloyd Haines (drums) and Patrick Dunn (visuals).
