Day by the river for sailors and spectators at annual raft race

Canoeing capers will descend upon Needham Market on Sunday with the town’s annual Raft Race.

Intrepid crews will put themselves and their homemade crafts forward among fierce competition for the races at Needham Lake, with the regular big crowds anticipated.

Competitors will have the chance to race their rafts twice - provided they can get them onto the water and then climb aboard.

This year’s theme, for both crafts and costumes, is Alice In Wonderland.

The first race is scheduled to start at 2pm.

The event is free to attend, and spectators are advised to arrive early to ensure a good vantage point.

Charity and commercial stalls will also be pitched on the riverbank.

A safety briefing for teams will take place at Needham Market Community Centre tonight at 7.30pm.
