A guitarist referred to as the ‘Hendrix of the Sahara’ is coming to perform at the Junction in Cambridge on Sunday, January 24.

Vieux Farka Touré was born in Niafunké, Mali in 1981, the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Touré.

The senior Touré came from a historical tribe of soldiers, and defied his parents in becoming a musician. When Vieux was in his teens he declared his intention to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Vieux met New York-based singer Julia Easterlin for an impromptu studio session in 2014, which lead to the release of a collaborative album.

Following this, an entire project and album titled Touristes (Six Degrees, October 30 2015), was conceived, in which the artists examine their respective musical roots and passions together to create something entirely new and unique.
