Youngsters set bests at nationals




Three Stowmarket Swimming Club swimmers travelled to Ponds Forge at Sheffield last week to compete in the prestigious Summer National Championships.

Coach Sylvia Harrison said: “I am extremely proud of these three swimmers as they have all worked so hard all year.

“Manfred Battle and PhoebeHayde have both made tremendous progress and made a brilliant impression.

“Reaching the nationals is fantastic and then to achieve a place in the inals is brilliant for them and Stowmarket Swimming Club.”

Battle, 13, swam in the 100m butterfly and was in top form, achieving a one-second personal best (pb) with a time of one minute and 05.41 seconds, qualifying for the final where he knocked off a further 1.5 seconds (1.03.95) to finish in sixth place.

He also competed in the 50m butterfly and achieved another one-second pb to finish fifth in 28.97 in a very exciting final.

After only competing in her first regionals in May this year, Hayden’s selection was an incredible achievement.

The 14 year-old, swam in the 50m backstroke, achieving a one-second personal best of 31.88 to make the final where she finished sixth in 31.95.

Finn Middleton, 13, competed in the multi disability S8 classification and was the youngest competitor in this category.

Middleton swam a total of six events and gained several pbs in the 100m backstroke, 100m free, 50m free. 200m IM, 400m free, and his favourite event of the 100m butterfly, where he achieved a three-second pb in 1.28.26.
