Wilkinson has a tough end to a great year

Callum Wilkinson’s hopes of ending his 2015 campaign on a high were dashed after he withdrew mid-race from the English Schools senior boys’ 5km.

The Moulton-based racewalker, who has claimed three national records this year, was looking to retain the title in his last outing of the year.

Wilkinson’s outstanding performances for England and Great Britain over the last seven months finally caught up with him, as the teenager withdrew from the race shortly after the 3km mark.

The 18-year-old has set new British Under-20 records at one mile, 2km and 10km in a memorable year, which has seen him represent his country at competitions in Switzerland, Spain, Sweden and the Czech Republic.

Elsewhere, Callum’s younger brother George narrowly missed out on taking home a medal in the Junior boys’ 3km, but did have the satisfaction of setting a new personal best of 20 minutes and 37.57 seconds.
