Walsham-le-Willows assistant manager Paul Musgrove admitted he has done plenty of head scratching in a bid to find the right formula to safeguard his team from relegation.

The Willows sit perilously close to the Thurlow Nunn Premier League drop zone, but they were buoyed by a 2-1 away win at Newmarket Town last Friday night.

Stunning strikes in each half from Michael Barwick and Ryan Clark ensured the club’s second win in the last three games, and Musgrove believes that workrate holds the key to survival.

“We set the team up not to be beaten in the game and I thought we got off to a great start for the first 30 minutes,” he said.

“The players need to understand that every minute in every game counts and if we are going to get ourselves out of trouble then we need to show the sort of application we did against Newmarket.

“We’ve been scratching our heads as to why we’re in the position we are and at times I’ve panicked. I’m lucky to have an old head in Paul Smith (manager) being able to calm me down.

“There are lots of reasons why it perhaps hasn’t gelled this year, big player turnaround, lack of consistency and concentration. The next few weeks, when we play teams around us, are vital.”

Walsham got off to a dream start when Michael Barwick smashed a loose ball high past Dan Heath in the fourth minute.

However, the hosting Jockeys equalised in the 43rd minute when captain Adam Dalby turned in a corner at the back post.

Newmarket started the second half brightly, but Walsham went closest to regaining the lead when Andrew Wood’s header was brilliantly tipped round by Heath.

Walsham introduced Clark in the 62nd minute and 10 minutes later the substitute’s outside of the foot shot flew in to win the game for the Willows.
