Wallis breaks hoodoo with golden jacket final success

Mark Wallis spoke of his joy at ending a long standing hoodoo as Patchys Kerry became the first ever ante-post favourite to win the Ladbrokes Golden Jacket final at Crayford on Tuesday, writes Sam Murley.

The firm favourite showcased her credentials with a devastating display in the 714m final as she raced well clear to take victory by over six lengths ahead of Diesel Flo in 44.94 seconds, scooping the £17,500 jackpot in the process.

“The result is a fantastic one for everyone at the Imperial Kennels,” said the Lakenheath-based trainer.

“She is just an awesome bitch and her winning it from the beginning of the night was never in doubt; she has been just phenomenal throughout.

“It is great to buck a trend and break that hoodoo in what is one of the biggest races on the calendar.”

It was Wallis’ second win in three years after Hometown Honey obliged in 2014.

There was further joy for Wallis, who also scooped glory in the main supporting event, the Peter Bussey, as Swift Whirlwind sealed the trainer’s fifth successive win in the event.

Wallis’ Aayamzamodel also enjoyed a fitting finale to her career as she won the Tony Morris Stakes.

“She has had a great career and it is a really fitting end to her time racing,” added Wallis.

“In all, we had four winners on the night and it was just a terrific evening for everyone involved at the kennels.”
