HIGH HOPES: Lakenheath handler Mark Wallis believes Domino Storm can create history by becoming the first bitch to win both the Oaks and the William Hill Greyhound Derby

Mark Wallis believes that Domino Storm is well equipped to create a slice of history and become the first bitch in the sport to win both the Oaks and William Hill Greyhound Derby.

The daughter of Makeshift is one of 16 entries in the Category One competition which starts tonight at Wimbledon for the Lakenheath handler who is seeking a third win in the event having won in 2012 with Blonde Snapper and in 2009 with Kinda Ready.

Although statistics look bleak for Domino Storm, who will race from trap one in heat 34 of the opening round on Saturday, with only two bitches winning the competition since 1979, the seven times champion trainer is optimistic that she can buck that trend

Since defeating kennelmate Evanta Evita in the Oaks at Belle Vue in December the October 2014 bitch has retained a solid level of form, including registering wins in her last six starts.

“Domino Storm has got a good first round draw and I would say that she is the best overall chance of the kennel winning the competition this year,” said Wallis.

“It would be a great achievement for her to win it and become the first bitch ever to win the Derby and the Oaks.

“She runs Wimbledon very well having won the Derby Plate final there last year and she has a terrific record around there.

“She broke the track record at Sheffield last week and she really is running at the top of her game. In my opinion I don’t just think she is capable of going a long way but she can win it.

“To win the Derby you have really got to be able to go under 28.40 seconds and she has done that. She is a classy bitch and she definitely has a big chance.”

While Wallis is keen on the chances of Domino Storm he has also put forward the claims of two other dogs that could go a long way in the competition should luck be on their side.

“Shutthe Backdoor reminds me a lot of Aero Nemesis in that he is a dog that has got blistering early pace,” said Wallis.

“He is an Irish Derby semi-finalist and has won a couple of big competitions in Ireland.

“Calco Flyer is running out of his skin and at around 200-1 is great value. He is in a heat where only two qualify so he will have to be at his very best to get through.

“We always seem to unearth one or two out of the bag so hopefully out of the others we have in it we might find another couple capable of going well.”

n Last night Billys Bullet contested the final of the Category One Coral Regency at Hove.
