Walker-Hebborn handed silver after doping scandal
Bury St Edmunds swimmer Chris Walker-Hebborn has been awarded a silver medal after Russian swimmer Vitaly Melnikov was handed a doping ban.
Melnikov tested positive for banned substance EPO at the European Short-course Swimming Championships in December 2013 resulting in two-year ban as well as being stripped of his 100m backstroke silver and relay gold medals.
That means 24-year-old European and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Walker-Hebborn, who finished joint third in the 100m backstroke event with France’s Camille Lacourt, has been upgraded to silver along with the Frenchman.
Taking to social media sit Twitter on Monday, Walker-Hebborn said: “A year and a half later, I go from bronze to silver. Not the same getting it now... #drugfreesport? #Russia.”
