Just under a year ago a hot and sunny day was the backdrop for an epic encounter between Sussex Thunder and the Bury Saints which saw the Saints win in triple overtime and advance to the RoseBowl.

Sunday in Brighton was wetter and colder but the action was not, as the two sides put on another great spectacle of football in BAFA National League SFC1.

Although the 28-all draw ended the Saints’ 20-game winning streak, head coach Christian Cantrill said: “Alt-hough it wasn’t the result we wanted, we still sit atop SFC1 and control our own destiny, starting with Colchester coming to us, and our focus will be on winning that game.

“I was proud of how the team responded both during the game and after.

“I liked the focus and determination I saw in their eyes after the game and we will be ready for the Gladiators.”

Stand out performances from the Saints came from Cory Jenkins with 120 all-purpose yards and a touchdown, Aaron Wheatley with four catches for 56 yards and two touchdowns.

Derek White finished with 77 all-purpose yards and a touchdown.

Chris May highlighted special teams with 92 return yards, and the defence was led by Trent Myers with seven tackles, three for a loss, and Shaz Begg with five tackles and a forced fumble.

Dmont Herring, in addition to his interception and touchdown weighed in with four tackles.

The Saints led 14-7 at the interval but had to come from behind to secure a draw to bring another epic affair be-tween the two sides to a conclusion.

A win against the Colchester Gladiators on Sunday will confirm the Saints as Conference Champions for a sec-ond successive year.

The game at Thetford Rugby Club kicks-off at 2pm and all support would be appreciated.
