Veteran swimmer proves that age is no barrier
A veteran member of Stowmarket Swimming Club declared “age is not a restriction, it is a challenge” after bagging an impressive haul of 11 medals at a major tournament earlier this month.
Len Phoenix, 66, won five golds, five silvers and one bronze in the men’s 65-to-69 age bracket during the Midland Masters 2015 swimming championships at Royal Leamington Spa.
Phoenix, who is also a long-time instructor at Stradbroke Swim and Fitness Centre, was first in the 200m and 400m freestyle, 200m and 400m individual medley, and 50m butterfly.
He also took second place in the 100m freestyle, 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and 100m individual medley, and secured third in the 50m freestyle, across the three-day event.
Phoenix said: “I was absolutely over the moon.
“I think I came into it at the right time. It was just a great meet and I was absolutely shattered by the end of it.”
This haul takes Phoenix’s tally for the year so far to 54 medals.
His impressive list comprises of 17 golds, 27 silvers and 10 bronzes, which has been achieved over the course of seven different masters swimming championships held in 2015.
