Trio receive England call-ups

Three west Suffolk basketball girls are set to pull on an England shirt to represent their country this summer.

Jasmine Tebbit, from Bury, and Esther Little, from Ixworth, have both made the final 12 in the country to play for the under-15s, in Copenhagen in a week’s time.

And under-17 star Ashley Pink has just received the call to feature against Scotland after recovering from a nasty ankle ligament injury earlier in the season.

Their club coaches — Kathryn James and Amy Linton — also come from Bury St Edmunds.

On their selection, James said: “The girls have all worked hard and deserve this accolade after a hard club season.

“Being in an England programme gives you a chance to pit yourself against the best in the country so it’s not just about the physical attributes you have but also the mental.

“We also mustn’t forget two other Suffolk girls still within England squads and waiting to hear if they have also got a spot too.

“Freya Cooney, from Woodbridge, and Maya Price from Bury, are in the under-18 and under-16 programmes respectively.”

Selection is particularly sweet for Tebbit, who did not make the final cut last year, but proved her worth to the head coaches during a recent friendly against under-16 and 18 girls’ side from Sheffield at an England camp.

Little, who also swims for West Suffolk Swimming Club and is in the regional netball development programme, is one of only three year-young girls in the team, so at just 13, gets the chance to make her mark.
