Hadleigh 1st XV 33

Thurston 1st XV 16

THURSTON’S chances of being crowned Eastern Counties Two champions were dashed on Saturday following a 33-16 defeat in the top-of-the-table clash away to Hadleigh.

The visitors opened the scoring through Simon Sinclair’s penalty, only for the hosts to immediately wipe out that advantage with a converted try.

However, as the half drew to a close, Thurston regained the lead as Sinclair coolly dispatched another penalty.

After the interval, Hadleigh hit back once more with a converted try but this relief was short lived as Sinclair kicked another three points from a penalty to bring the scores to 14-9.

In response, the hosts then fought back scoring a further three tries, two converted, to grab the initiative and although Oliver Paxman added a converted try for Thurston, it proved a consolation as the hosts grabbed victory and top spot.

Despite the defeat, Thurston can still secure promotion with victory over basement club Swanston at home on April 14.
