Thurston vow they won’t get complacent

Have your say

Thurston will seal promotion if they beat winless Sawston, but club captain Ben Sinclair is adamant his side will avoid complacency in tomorrow’s crucial home fixture (3pm).

Sinclair is hoping his side can seal their return to the Greene King IPA Eastern Counties Division One following their relegation last season.

Thurston only need a bonus point win to overtake Swaffham in second place and clinch the final promotion spot.

They come up against a Sawston side who are bottom of the table, without a league win all season and enduring the worst defensive record in the division.

Sinclair said: “We’re pretty confident about the game against Sawston but we never take anything for granted.

“We lost against Norwich Union a few months ago when we were favourites, so we can’t lose focus.”

Thurston had the opportunity to win the championship away at Hadleigh, but lost 33-16 to the eventual winners so thoughts are now focused on Sawston and the future.

Sinclair said: “If we beat Hadleigh we would have capped off a fine season.

“We were missing eight or nine first-team players, but Hadleigh deserved to win the game.”

“It’s been a positive season — we had five players capped for the Suffolk team, which is a great credit to the club.”
