Thurston quartet fourth at finals

Four Year 11 badminton players from Thurston Community College finished a fantastic fourth at the national finals held in Nottingham.

Ryan Newcombe, Tommy Hunt, Josh Braker, and Ben Bennett Day, who have achieved unrivalled success at Suffolk Schools level over the past three years, just missed out on a top-three spot in the under-16 category.

The championships involved more than 32,000 young people, representing more than 1500 schools from across the country.

Mr Lewis, head of PE at Thurston, said: “I’m immensely proud of the whole squad for their efforts throughout the year.

“The boys are facing the same pressures of other 15-16 year-olds with the rigours of exam preparation, yet have stayed fully committed to their sport which they excel in at both school and club level.

“Year-on-year they have dominated school level badminton at county level, but this year have coped with the step up in quality to rightly reinforce their position as one of the finest school teams across the whole country.

“To even qualify for the finals was a terrific achievement, so to finish so highly has exceeded all of our expectations.”
