Thomas, 13, sets new record

Suffolk swimming sensation Thomas Clare has set a new British age group record at the Summer Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Competing in the 200-metre backstroke event, the Bacton-based youngster swam an incredible time of 2.08.96 in the heats.

After receiving a certificate from British Swimming for breaking the record, a delighted Clare said: “I found the Championships a real challenge this year, but I learned a lot about competing at top events like this that will come in useful for the future.”

Unfortunately, a badly-timed turn in the finals saw him miss out on a podium place. But the new age group record has confirmed the 13-year-old’s place on the England Talent Development Programme for another year.

Clare competed in nine events and qualified for eight finals.
