Thetford ladies claim third in Invitation Day

A sparkling day led to a successful Ladies’ Invitation Day at Thetford Golf Club.

The winning team of Margaret Hayward and her guest Jan Halil from Southwold, and Pam Ellis and her guest Julie Proctor from King’s Lynn, tallied 84 points, two more than Kath Malvern, Jan Bone and their Dunston Hall guests Sue Henderson and Julie Carpenter.

Thetford ladies’ captain Liz Wigg led the third-placed team of Moira Morgan, June Dean (Weston Park) and Fiona Anderson (Royal West Norfolk) with 81.

Players from 16 different clubs took part on a lovely day when the course looked a picture.

Thetford won their second match in the newly-formed Norfolk Handicap League, beating Dereham 4-0. After two home wins the real test for captain Mike Horley and his team will come in the next two matches when they are away to Richmond Park before the return at Dereham.

n Sue Pitcher led the qualifiers for the matchplay stage of Thetford Golf Club’s Ladies’ Championship with a 36-hole total of 170. Pitcher came in with a fine 82 in Sunday’s first round and followed up with 88 on Tuesday.

She finished eight strokes ahead of 14-year-old Abigail O’Riordan, who had rounds of 88 and 90, while Janice Fossey was third with 88 and 92.

The other qualifiers for the knock-out were Kath Malvern, who improved by 15 strokes with a second round of 83 for a total of 181, Jessica Dixon (181), Heather Keeble (185), lady captain Liz Wigg (187) and Wendy Puttock (188). The eight qualifiers will play off for the championship title.
