Thetford ace Mold seeks redemption against Newton
Jason ‘Shrek’ Mold has admitted that he would like a rematch with Wes Newton at March’s Coral UK Open.
The 45-year-old from Thetford took on the current world number 29 in the last 64 of the event in 2015, but despite having recorded impressive wins over Jamie Robinson and Matthew Edgar to reach that stage, it was Newton that ran out a comfortable 9-0 victor at the Butlins Minehead Resort.
However, having booked his place in the tournament for a third consecutive year by winning a 127-strong Rileys Amateur Qualifiers competition in Norwich, Mold is keen to have another crack at Newton.
“I want to play Wes Newton again. It won’t be 9-0 this time, put it that way,” said Mold.
“I picked up such a valuable lesson against him. I was on such a high after winning two games that during the break I went back to my hotel to freshen up.
“That worked against me because I lost all of my adrenaline and I couldn’t get it back. I should have stayed at the venue and thrown my darts.”
The first prize, which last year was scooped by Michael van Gerwen thanks to his 11-5 win over Mendham’s Peter Wright, is worth £50,000.
