Interim Bury Saints head coach Christian Cantrill has warned his players to keep their feet firmly on the ground despite seeing them make a winning start to the new season.

The Saints, who went through the whole of 2015 unbeaten, opened their 2016 British American Football Association National League Division One campaign in style by dismantling Rosebowl semi-final opponents Sussex Thunder 34-0.

A cautious Cantrill said: “Although we got a massive result, we have a lot to work on.

“I’m very proud of the way my coordinators Neil Van Holland, Bobby Coffman and Jamie Nuttall, who prepared and executed a very precise game plan to achieve the result.

“We have work on our hands with nine more very tough games going forward.”

After holding the high-powered Sussex offence, the Saints took only three plays to drive 84 yards and score, culminated by running back Cory Jenkins’ 54 yard touchdown

Late in the first quarter, Fred Boyle went over before Pauly Bowers nailed the extra point.

Boyle then passed to Don Washington for a Saints touchdown with Giles adding the extras for a 21-0 half-time advantage.

New running back Tommy Ellerbe sprinted 35 yards to increase their lead and Boyle connected with Josh Marlow on a touchdown pass before Bowers completed the scoring by adding the extra point for a 34-0 win.

Fabian Mitchell and the rest of the defensive line had a standout game.

Bury Saints are back in action on Sunday, April 24, against the Solent Thrashers at Thetford Rugby Club, starting at2pm.
