Strong results at nationals for West Suffolk

West Suffolk Athletics Club enjoyed some strong results at the 2015 Saucony English National Cross Country Championships in London on Sunday.

Megan Newton produced the best individual performance of the day with a time of 16 minutes 16 seconds across four kilometres to finish 18th in the under-15 girls’ race and help the team to eighth.

She was supported by Rebecca Daniel (63rd, 17.03), Lauren Murphy (102nd, 17.41), Claudia Spencer-Hall (123rd, 17.54), and Mikayela Sealby (288th).

Adam Crawford — West Suffolk’s lone runner in the under-17 men’s race over 6km — struggled with a recurrence of his breathing problems, but persevered to finish 196th in 25.17. Seb Anthony clocked 37.05 over 10km in the junior men’s race to place 50th.

Christine Anthony continued to show signs of a return to form with 217th in the senior women’s race — clocking 38.56 for 8km.

Adam Newton (252nd, 14.52) led home a trio of under-13 boys over 3km, with Ewan Boyle (281st, 15.04) and Reuben Witcherley (301st, 15.20) following

Libby Walshe (131st, 14.36) led West Suffolk’s under-13 girls home and was followed by Chloe Cavill (333rd, 16.19), Alana Wilson (356th, 16.19) and Alex Ginns (383rd, 17.07) — the team placed 45th.

Nial Ackroyd recorded 17.49 for 4,500m in the under-15 boys’ event to lead home clubmates Thomas Mccarthy (102nd, 17.56). Cameron Ackroyd (197th, 18.49), Phil Crutchlow (315th, 20.29) and Josh Walker (325th, 20.43) — the team placed 25th.

Charlotte Murphy was as high as ninth in the early stages of the under-17 women’s race, but a fall on the treacherous course forced her to pull out around half distance.

n Two of West Suffolk Athletics Club’s senior athletes made their first ever foray indoors for the South of England Masters Indoor Championships, held at Lee Valley.

Christine Anthony took gold in over-50 women’s 800m and 1,500m, while Celia Duncan took gold in the corresponding over-60 women’s categories.
