Stowmarket Masters are back on top

Stowmarket Swimming Club recaptured the Top Visiting Club Trophy at this year’s Valentine’s Masters meet, held at the Kingfisher Leisure Centre, Sudbury.

The meet doubles up as an open event for swimmers throughout the North London and East region area as well as being the Suffolk Masters Championships for Suffolk swimmers

In the open section, Stowmarket grabbed 12 gold medals and are Suffolk champions in 18 events.

Clive Mitson (45-49 years’ category) stormed to open victory in 50-metre backstroke, 100m and 50m breaststroke, 100m individual medley (IM) and 50m freestyle, as well as securing bronze in 200m freestyle. He was crowned Suffolk champion in all six events.

Len Phoenix (65-69 years) won gold in 50m back (Suffolk champion), silver in the 50m butterfly, 100m IM, 50m breast and 100m back, and bronze in the 50m fly.

Dale Barker (50-54 years) powered to victory in the 200m and 100m freestyle, 100m IM and 100m fly, automatically becoming Suffolk champion.

Andy Wright (55-59 years) was hampered with a fractured fibula, but still won gold in 100m backstroke, silver in the 200m freestyle, 50m back and 100m butterfly, and bronze in the 50m fly and 50m freestyle.

He has become Suffolk champion in five of those events — only missing out on 50m freestyle.

She took gold in the 50m fly (Suffolk champion), silver in the 50m back, 100m freestyle (Suffolk champion, personal best), 50m freestyle (personal best) and 100m IM, and bronze in the 200m freestyle.

Ryan Tutthill (16-24 years) — in his maiden masters competition — clinched silver in the 100m breaststroke and had five other top 10 placings out of his eight swims.

Alasdair Penman (16-24 years) narrowly missed out on the medals in the 100m IM and had four other top-10 finishes in his seven races.
