Seven-up for champion Taylor

Bury St Edmunds’ Sean Taylor clinched his seventh successive UK Short Tennis Championship.

World number one Taylor defeated Derby’s Michael Frost, 6-4, 6-3 in his opening encounter.

It was a similar story in round two as he disposed of Devon’s Ray Matthews, 6-2, 6-3, but it was not until the quarter-final clash with Londoner, David Simpson, that Taylor started to show glimpses of his true form.

The champion’s reflexes were too good for his younger opponent as he advanced to the semi-finals a comfortable 6-3, 6-0 victor.

Taylor made light work of Newcastle’s Micky Raynor with an emphatic 6-0, 6-1 score to take him to the final against Team UK international, David Samuels.

He dug deep to overcome Samuels in last year’s quarter finals, on his way to a sixth National title, and a similar battle was envisaged this year.

But it was not the case this time, as Taylor ruthlessly punished Samuels’ net play and methodically moved his opponent around the court at will, to cruise to a 6-1, 6-3 success and a seventh consecutive national title.

While it was hinted this was Taylor’s final tournament, the manner in which he celebrated his success suggests the enigmatic champion — who has taken the UK to an all-time high number three ranking for this year’s summer internationals — has yet to make a final decision.
