Scott’s Thetford are full of confidence after Kirkley win

DOUBLE GOALSCORER: Elliott Smith, left, netted twice for Thetford on Saturday

Thetford Town boss Mark Scott is in a confident mood ahead of their trip to Haverhill Rovers tomorrow (3pm).

The Brecklanders (14th) recorded back-to-back wins for the first time since September at the weekend, with Elliott Smith striking twice to secure an impressive 2-1 win over high-flying Kirkley and Pakefield.

And the Thetford boss is hoping his side can build on Saturday’s win with another away at the team directly below them in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division table.

“The way that we’re playing at the moment, we’ll be going there confident of picking up another victory,” enthused Scott. “Kirkley are a strong attacking side who can cause all kinds of problems, but we made them look ordinary.”

Town started brightly and were awarded a corner within the first five minutes.

Sam Bond took it short, passing to Bruno Tavares, whose cross into the box found the head of Smith to make it 1-0.

It took until the 40th minute for Town to score again when a strike from Ryan Pearson rebounded off the post for Smith to bring the ball down on his chest and knock it past the keeper.

The second half was the same as the first, with Thetford having all the play.

Sam Bryant was playing extremely well on the wing, with Shane Leech and Simon Cuddy working hard in the middle of the pitch.

Scott Cruickshank made a brilliant acrobatic save towards the end of full-time, but Kirkley eventually got one back from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Mildenhall Town return to action with a trip to leaders Norwich United, and Walsham-le-Willows visit Gorleston (both tomorrow, 3pm).

Mildenhall (eighth) were not in action at the weekend, while the Willows (16th) lost 3-0 at Stanway Rovers.

In the First Division, Stowmarket Town (11th) look to get back to winning ways with two home games in four days, starting with the visit of AFC Sudbury Reserves tomorrow (3pm).

Wayne Proctor netted late into the first half to help earn a credible 1-1 draw against Haverhill Borough at Greens Meadow on Saturday, ending a run of three consecutive defeats.

“Things are going in the right direction,” declared boss Rick Andrews, whose side host Needham Market Reserves on Tuesday (7.45pm).

Team Bury (12th) also prepare for a home double with Haverhill Borough (Saturday) and Cornard United (Tuesday) visiting Ram Meadow in the coming days.

The Blues saw their three-match unbeaten run come to an end on Tuesday, losing 4-3 to title-chasing Swaffham Town.

n Brandon Ladies won 11-0 at Toftwood with goals from Brooke Wickens (three), Laura Brame (two), Tiff Forshaw (two), Tash Rutter, Frankie Torrance, Georgia O’Malley and Anna Taramanowska.
