Saints’ dream of Premier place moves step closer after victory

Bury Saints’ bid for a place in the National Premier League moved a step closer on Sunday afternoon when they secured back-to-back league titles in style.

The Saints clinched the BAFANL Southern Football Conference 1 (SFC 1) on a sun-drenched day in Thetford, with a 39-13 drubbing of last year’s Division One play-off participants Colchester Gladiators.

Victory also secured the club a first-round play-off home game, at Thetford, on August 7.

Delighted head coach Christian Cantrill, who took over in the hotseat earlier this season, said: “After last week’s dramatic tie in Brighton we needed to get re-focused on the task in hand and the players responded well today.

“Winning a Conference Championship at home in front of our fans was a real treat.

“We hope that it’s not the only championship we can bring to Bury this year as we still have a final regular season game at Herts and then the play-offs.

“We do have some things to work on for the next game and we will be ready for a Hertfordshire team that can be dangerous given the chance.”

The Saints were 25-0 in front at the interval, with Chris Rhodey’s first touchdown of the season added to by Derek White, Francis Hughes and Chris May.

White then went over for a dazzling 60-yard touchdown with Michael Galindo completing the scoring.

Pauly Bowers kicked two extra points.

The Saints’ defence was led by Hewett with five tackles and a forced fumble.

Other standouts were William Hill with four tackles, and a forced fumble, which he also recovered, and Chris Smith, who had an interception and three tackles.

Offensive stars were White with 161 yards rushing and May with 101 yards.

The Saints now have a week off from action before travelling to St Albans to play the Cheetahs on July 31.
