Mark Royal is relieved to get back to competing in the Just Retirement World Indoor Championships as he continues his recovery from serious illness.

The Stowmarket bowls ace heads back to the Potters Resort to commence his tournament tomorrow (9.30am) starting in the world pairs alongside Andy Thompson against Ronnie Duncan and Colin Walker, before beginning the singles event with a first- round tie against Mark McPeak on Wednesday (7.30pm).

But while others will have their eyes firmly set on title glory, Royal – who suffered a first- round elimination to Gary R Smith last year – is happy to just be playing again after suffering with a Pancreatic cyst, which has seen bowls take a back seat over recent months.

“I’m really not prepared at all if I’m honest,” said the number 14 seed, who reached the singles semi-finals in 2011. “I’ve had a lot of health problems recently which is obviously not ideal.

“There is a lot of pain in my side and I suffer from tiredness, bowls has definitely taken the back seat recently.

“However, I’m fairly relaxed and I just want to go and enjoy it.

“Hopefully I can relax into it because there is no reason why I can’t do well.

“I’m more confident than I was last year, I’m happy just to be there and after the last few months I feel the pressure is off.”
