Rednall suffers world final defeat
Defending champion Katherine Rednall has relinquished her World Indoor Bowls crown after suffering a final defeat to Laura Thomas.
The 19-year-old Stowmarket-based ace, who was the youngest ever winner of the tournament last year, failed to find her consistency throughout the encounter as her opponent sealed a straight sets success, winning 14-5, 10-9.
Thomas got proceedings under way and quickly got herself into a commanding position to take a three shot lead after the first end in the first set as Rednall struggled with the pace of the carpet.
Rednall responded superbly to reduce the deficit to just one shot with a two-shot victory in the second end but back came Thomas in the third end to secure a one-shot success with a brilliant final bowl.
The fourth end saw Rednall again reduce the deficit by a further shot with a one-shot success but again her Welsh opponent hit back with a solid three-shot victory in the next end to extend her overall advantage to 7-3.
That advantage was extended further in the sixth end with a one-shot win as Rednall appeared to be adjusting to the pace of the carpet.
The Suffolk youngster continued to struggle in the following end as Thomas eased to a two-shot win, but Rednall regained her composure in the eighth end with a two-shot success to cut the deficit to 10-5.
However, it proved too little too late for Rednall to save the first set as her opponent clinched a two-shot win in the following two ends to take an overall 14-5 success and seal the opening set.
Reddnall responded strongly at the beginning of the second set to take a two-shot victory in the first end of the set.
However, her lead was quickly reduced as Thomas hit back with a brilliant final bowl in the second end to take a one-shot victory, before going on to take a 3-2 lead with a two-shot success in the following end.
Rednall finally appeared to find her rhythm in the fourth end and hit back with a three-shot victory as Thomas wobbled to see her opponent go back ahead with a 5-3 advantage.
However, it proved a short lived blip as Thomas hit back with a brilliant final bowl in the fifth end to reduce the deficit to just one shot with a two-shot sin.
That momentum continued with the Welsh player in the sixth set as a pinpont defensive shot, knocked two of Rednall’s bowls out of contention, before she went on to seal a one-shot win and draw level overall.
Thomas took a two-shot win in the seventh end to take a 7-5 overall lead but Rednall hit back, matching her opponent’s success in the following end, to draw level before going to on to seal a one-shot lead with a solitary shot win in the ninth end.
Rednall extended her advantage with another one-shot success in the penultimate end of the set, but her opponent was not to be denied as Thomas clinched a three-shot success in the final end to clinch the set, 10-9, and match, to become the first Welsh woman to win the title.
