Pool takes trophy on final hole decider

Sarah Pool won a tightly-contested Joan O’Meara Trophy final against Mary Blasby in perfect weather conditions at Bury St Edmunds Golf Club on Sunday.

The trophy was first presented in 1984 by Joan’s family and thought to be one of her tennis trophies.

After a medal round, open to all ladies with a handicap, the top eight entered the knockout round.

Giving two shots on the seventh and 10th, the experienced Blasby (24 handicap) faced a tough challenge from the start against Pool, who is new to golf and has had a great season so far.

Blasby took an early lead, winning the first two holes before Pool found form on the third to take that hole and Blasby the fourth.

After a couple of halved holes, Blasby capitalised on her first shot hole. By the halfway point she was one hole up.

Despite being in a bunker on the 10th hole and giving a shot, Blasby managed to salvage a half.

Pool responded by taking the 11th and 12th holes, the latter with a great third shot into the green.

After two more halved holes, Blasby won the 14th leaving the match all square with four holes to go.

Pool won the 17th hole after Blasby found herself in trouble with a fourth shot from under the trees right of the fairway.

Pool was one up going down the 18th.

Both players made hard work of this difficult last hole and ended halving it, to leave Pool the 2015 Joan O’Meara winner.
