Nick shares his sporting memories in new book

The day a Test match umpire took the players back out onto the Victory Ground in Bury St Edmunds because a tea lady was not ready is recalled in a new book.

It happened in a NatWest Trophy first-round match between Suffolk and Northamptonshire in June 1989.

Pat Coates, who still prepares lunches and teas at the club, was at the centre of the story which is featured in Scoop, a collection of tales across four decades written by ex-sports editor and current Suffolk FA press officer Nick Garnham.

The time ex-Bury CC skipper Tom Huggins thought he was the victim of a wind-up when he received a voicemail asking him to call TalkSPORT radio is also detailed. Huggins thought it was a practical joke until the station rang a few days later wanting to speak to him about taking five wickets in five balls in a T20 match.

The book contains a host of stories featuring clubs and sportsmen from west Suffolk and beyond that were covered by Garnham while working for the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich Star and Green ‘Un.

The 54-year-old, who worked for newspaper publishers Archant Ltd for 32 years, said: “It was Bury St Edmunds groundsman and Suffolk cricket coach Bobby Flack who sowed the seed in my mind that I should write a book about my career.”
