Newson makes Maldon move for more game time

FOND FAREWELL: Sam Newson, who left Needham Market this week, netted on his Maldon debut

Sam Newson admits that leaving Needham Market was a tough decision - but one he had to make for ‘selfish’ reasons.

On Tuesday night the striker made his Maldon and Tiptree debut, scoring a consolation as his new side lost 2-1 to Haringey Borough.

“I’m really happy with the move,” said Newson, who netted 134 goals in 238 appearances at Bloomfields in a stint lasting more than five years, but felt it was time to look elsewhere after falling down the pecking order.

“Obviously, I’ve been with Needham a long time and they’re still a great club and I want them to do well, but I had to be a bit selfish and think about my playing time.

“Leaving Needham was a hard thing to do. They’re a great club, everyone’s great there from the staff to the fans to the volunteers.

“But I’m 27 and have to think about playing matches.”

Newson added that he has no qualms about dropping down from the Ryman Premier Division to the Division One North, because he feels the Jammers are the right club for him.

The forward wouldn’t elaborate upon rumours that both Bury Town and AFC Sudbury had enquired about his services. Instead, he chose to look forward.

“Needham are a good club and I think Maldon are similar, their style of play and the way I play fits the same mould,” Newson said.

“There were a few possibilities, but I’m not going to say who they were.

“But Maldon impressed me by going that extra mile. They showed me they wanted me to join them.”

Now a Jammer, Newson is desperate to offer his new club exactly the service they want from the goal-hungry forward.

He added: “My target for the rest of the season is to take my total to 20.”

n Meanwhile Needham made it four wins on the spin following a 1-0 at Dulwich Hamlet on Saturday with a 2-0 win at Staines on Tuesday. They host Enfield Town tomorrow (3pm).
