New Thetford boss relishing challenge
Danny White is ‘up for the challenge’ of reviving Thetford Town’s season after being announced as their new manager, writes Alex Moss.
White, a former midfielder at the likes of King’s Lynn Town and Wroxham, was named as Mark Scott’s permanent successor last Thursday night.
And after taking charge of his first game in the 0-0 draw with Whitton United at the weekend, he admits there must be realistic targets set for his first managerial role.
“I’m not going to perform miracles over night,” said the new Thetford boss, whose side host Felixstowe and Walton United tomorrow (3pm).
“Thetford are where they are right now for a reason and it’s going to need time.
“I’m up for the challenge; the boys are up for the challenge and we started with a clean sheet against Whitton.
“It was a scrappy game and a draw was a fair result. There are things for us to work on in training, but it’s exciting times.”
The Brecklanders (19th) have conceded the most goals out of any team in the Premier Division so far this season (30), with a slightly better goal difference keeping them above bottom-placed Fakenham Town.
White started the season as a player with current Premier Division champions Norwich United, but was forced to put his playing days on hold due to multiple blood clots on the lung.
“I was playing and had intentions to carry on this season,” he said. “It’s still risky for me to play so this is the next best thing for me to stay involved in football.
“I’m hoping to pass on the experience I have to the players and I want to see the club do well. I’ve won this league on a few occasions so I know what it takes to win.
“I’ve been lucky enough to have been at some top quality clubs and worked under some very good managers in that time. I’ll be as honest as I can with the players and hopefully we can start climbing out of trouble.”
n Thetford are hosting a Fun Day at Mundford Road for tomorrow’s game against Felixstowe, where donations will be welcomed instead of admission through the gate.
