Wilkins pleased with Williams' Needham arrival

Needham Market manager Richard Wilkins has moved to cover the recent departure of defender Sam Nunn with the signing of former Colchester United trainee JJ Williams.

It was confirmed last week that experienced centre-back Nunn had opted to swap the Marketmen for his hometown club Stowmarket Town – a move that has seen him drop down two levels in the non-league pyramid.

However, Wilkins has reacted quickly with the capture of Williams, who can play either in the heart of defence or at left-back.

The 21-year-old has penned a contract at Bloomfields after being released by League Two Colchester at the end of last season.

“JJ comes highly recommended and he was unlucky to be released by Colchester,” said Wilkins.

“He is very athletic, quick and will fit in nicely.

“He adds a lot of depth to our defensive department and I am sure the fans will really rate him.”

In a further boost to Wilkins ahead of his side’s 2018/19 Evo-Stik Southern League Central Division campaign, Jeremiah Kamanzi has agreed new terms with the club.

The former AFC Sudbury player joined Needham in January and went on to make 21 appearances before the end of the season.

Wilkins also revealed that the club is working on a couple more deals, with the boss keen to bolster his attacking options.

“We are not done – hopefully there will be one or two more coming in,” he added.

“If possible we would like to strengthen our forward options.

“It has to be the right forward at the right price.

“If one comes along we will make the effort to get them on board.”

l Meanwhile, Nunn has been joined at Stowmarket by former Bury Town winger Scott Chaplin.

The 29-year-old has joined the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division outfit from Felixstowe & Walton United.

Stowmarket manager Rick Andrews said: “We approached Scott halfway through last season about joining up.

“At that time Felixstowe were top of the league and chasing the title, so it was always going to be a tough decision for him.

“In my opinion, he fits into the squad perfectly both on and off the pitch.

“He has won the league with Hadleigh and obviously gained promotion last season with Felixstowe.

“He can play in a variety of positions, which I like as I want to continue the flexibility we have within the squad.”

In terms of outgoings, the Old Gold and Blacks have announced the departure of Amar Lewis to Bostik League Premier Division side Brightlingsea Regent.

The midfielder scored nine goals in 37 games during his debut season in Stowmarket colours.
