Murphy the best placed at inter-counties event

A depleted West Suffolk Athletics Club squad took part in the Inter Counties Cross Country at Cofton Park in Birmingham on Sunday.

Teams representing every English county plus the Scottish regions and Wales took part, with around 300 runners contesting each of the races.

The club’s best results came in the under-15 girls’ race.

Lauren Murphy, the only West Suffolk athlete representing Cambridgeshire, had by far her best run of the winter.

Just behind clubmate Megan Newton — one of 15 runners competing for Suffolk — for most of the race, Murphy eased past on the final run-in to a superb 17th, with Newton 18th.

Olivia Allum was well placed in 83rd, Rebecca Daniel disappointed with 109th and Claudia Spencer-Hall 218th.

Michael Bartram (43rd) and Seb Anthony (90th) were both recovering from recent colds and, after a promising start, unsurprisingly fell away somewhat in the under-20 men’s event.

Cameron McKie — a specialist over 800m — had a solid run over this much longer event and can be pleased with 125th.

Thomas McCarthy picked himself up from two falls in the under-15 boys’ race and consequently was a little lower than expected in 198th.

Caitlin Vizor suffered breathing problems and was forced to pull out of the under-13 girls’ event shortly after the start, while Hayden Lawrence was 286th in the under-13 boys’ race.

Holly Davies worked hard for 175th in under-17 women, while — in the under-17 men’s race — Ben Eames started brightly before falling away in the closing stages to come home 228th. Matt Le Poidevin got a late call-up to race and did his best despite limited training to finish 254th.

Adam Crawford suffered a recurrence of his breathing problems and had to pull out while well placed.

Maureen McCarthy led teammate Christine Anthony for the first half of the senior women’s race.

Anthony closed in and passed McCarthy around two-thirds race distance, only for McCarthy to stage a late charge to just finish ahead in 220th, with Anthony 224th.

Tom Eames was a very respectable 185th in the senior men’s race.
