Malcolm Borg struggled in muddy conditions in round one in the British Cycling National MTB Cross Country Series.

West Suffolk Wheeler Borg made the trip to Sherwood Pines in Mansfield for the 90-minute race, with the circuit rapidly turning into a mudfest, challenging him on the descents and turns.

He coped with the climbs, but it was a struggle to stay upright in the cloying mud. A mid-pack finish was well deserved.

The appalling weather conditions welcomed a group of diehard Wheelers to the inaugural Norfolk-based Summer Cross cyclo cross league meeting at Bircham Cross near King’s Lynn on Sunday.

In the combined U8/U10/U12 race, Harley Gregory (1st U10) and Oliver Griggs (1st U/12) continued their fine winter league performances. The combined Women’s and Men’s 50+ saw husband and wife duos of Paul and Carol Watson and Tracey and David Griggs battle it out.

The women’s race was notable for Tracey Griggs’ cyclo cross debut. She had a fine race to finish fifth, with Carol Watson fourth. For the men Paul Watson finished second and ahead of David Griggs.

In the men’s 40-49 race, Mike Bowen raced well for second, with Matt Denny also in the mix with the lead pack.

n The triathlon side of the club saw good performances at the Basildon Aquathlon on Sunday.

In the senior 400m swim/5000m run Casey Jo Maggs (Female Youth) finished second in age category in 36:33:22, while standout performance was a first time age category top spot for Niamh Perry’s mother Sharon who stormed round the Female Vet race in 31:02:76.

n A blustery westerly wind made for a difficult day on the A1303/Six Mile Bottom/A1304 (E33/25) course on the season’s opening Veterans’ Time Trial Association 25-mile time trial on Saturday, but Darren Davis went round on his debut in 1:03:23, comfortably over three minutes inside the standard for his age group.

Clubmate David Howes put in a gutsy performance to post 1:10:38, 38 seconds inside his age standard, while Henry Wood recorded 1:13:45.

n Oliver Griggs was in action on Saturday, in his debut U12 road race at the Lea Valley velopark. CC Hackney’s Primavera Circuit Series showcases emerging young talent, and Oliver showed his mettle in a field of 30 riders by finishing mid pack.
