Wanger is a record breaker for Sharks

Mildenhall Sharks’ Harry Wagner blew the field out of the water at the Suffolk County Championships to become under-14 champion.

He got off to a lightning start and then held his lead to win the 50m breastroke in a personal best (PB) time of 34.23 seconds as well coming first home in the 100m breastroke race at Ipswich’s Crown Pools.

Race after race, Wagner’s dedication brought home second (14 age group) in 100m individual medley (1 minute 07.66secs pb) followed by third (14 years) in the 50m fly, 100m fly (1min 05.30secs pb), 100m free style (58.54secs pb) and 200m breaststroke (2mins 44.03secs pb).

His hard work also resulted in him smashing three club records at the Mildenhall and District Swimming Club, which means he holds the club record for the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke in the 14-15 years age group.

Both 100m and 200m breaststroke were set in 1980 — 33 years ago — and the 50m breaststroke set in 2002.

Jennifer Eagles, one of six other Mildenhall teammates at the counties, was also on form and broke a club record set in October 2000 in the 16-17 years age group, swimming 50m breaststroke in a time of 39.16secs.

The youngest swimmer at the counties was Maria Buckles (nine years), who achieved pbs in both her races, 50m breaststroke (51.65secs) and 50m freestyle (42.69secs).

Ben Jamieson (15-16 years) came home with pbs in all his five races: 50m freestyle (27.08secs), 50m fly (30.67secs), 50m backstroke (31.51secs), 100m freestyle (1min 51secs) and 200m freestyle (2mins 10.48secs).

Grace Colasante (15-16 years) achieved four pbs over the course of the counties in the 50m backstroke (35.26secs), 100m freestyle (1min 5.85secs), 200m individual medley (2mins 44.90secs) and 100m backstroke (1min 15.19secs).

Sophia Colasante (12 years) competed well and can expect to achieve her goal at the 2014 counties.

Anna Armstrong (13 years) achieved a pb in 50m freestyle with 32.86secs and swam a fine 1min 25.50secs in the 100m race.
