Stowmarket Volleyball Club overcame challengers Newmarket to retain their Suffolk Cup crown for a third straight season.

Stowmarket defended well from the start, getting the ball to setter Kent and allowing him to utilise the middle attack of Koch from the outset.

And with momentum behind them, Kock contributed to an early 5-1 lead only for a four-point run of serves from Gale helped Newmarket recover to lead 11-10, before that was followed by three serves from Saunders to increase the lead to 14-12.

Stowmarket recovered to level at 18-18, before the serving of Miller helped them take a commanding 24-18 lead on the way to taking the first set with a 25-19 scoreline.

The second set started with Dovaston’s serve opening up a 5-1 lead for Newmarket.

Stowmarket quickly recovered to lead 8-6 before a string of six serves from Ames opened up a commanding 14-7 lead.

With the power of Sharpe and Watson in the outside roles proving a damaging threat to Newmarket, Stowmarket never looked back.

At 23-13 Kent called a quick combination attack which saw Ames pop up between Miller and Watson to score and take the game to set-point.

Newmarket saved one set point, but Stowmarket won the next to open up a 2-0 lead with the set finishing 25-14.

It was the turn of Koch to open up the lead for Stowmarket in the third set at 8-2 which was steadily extended thanks in-part to some great back-court recovery work from Whitefield and Watson.

With Stowmarket leading 24-13, a Newmarket error which sealed their fate, giving Stowmarket the set 25-13 and 3-0 victory to clinch the title.

n The match was followed by Suffolk Ladies III final game of the season as they slipped to a 3-1 defeat to Essex Ladies League table toppers Chelmsford.
