Chris Rix is targeting a British medal at a lower weight category after striking gold at the BWAD National Powerlifting Championships.
The 28-year-old Bury Bombers wheelchair basketball player lifted a personal best of 117kg in his 80-88kg weight category earlier this month in Stoke Mandeville to register his first national title.
The delighted former Horringer Court Middle School and Couty Upper School pupil, who suffers from cerebral palsy, said of collecting the medal: “I went up and got it and it did not hit me until the next day when my dad said ‘you know you are number one in your weight group’.”
But Rix, who is a member of East Bergholt-based Suffolk Spartans, is hoping to lower his weight to clinch another title at the prestigious competition.
“Next year I want to go down a weight a group to 75-80kg class to see if I can have that title as well,” said Rix.
The Suffolk Spartan previously won gold at 110kg-plus back in 2009 and will compete at the club’s main competition on August 25 alongside Paralympian Zoe Newson and able-bodied athletes.
