Places are filing up fast on the campsite for this year’s Mildenhall Cycling Rally — which is less than a month away.

The cycling festival will take place over the August Bank Holiday weekend, from August 23 to 25, at the Sheldrick Way site of Mildenhall College Academy and is expected to attract more than 5,000 people again.

The college’s playing fields become a temporary campsite for nearly 400 caravan and camping pitches and organisers Mildenhall Cycling Club are encouraging anyone who has not yet booked their pitch to do so now.

“Such is the popularity of this event, the campsite fills up before the rally, so we would suggest anyone wanting to stay on the rally site to book early to avoid any disappointment,” said Mark Burchett, chairman of the organising club.

The rally is a very popular event with aspiring riders that have gone on to win national and international recognition.

Olympic champions Victoria Pendleton CBE and Nicole Cooke OBE honed their bike handling skills on Mildenhall’s grass-track, while another Olympic gold medallist, Laura Trott — also a winner of a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this week – was a regular at the rally until she shot to prominence at the last Commonwealth Games in India.

The rally is not expected to see any major changes to the tried-and-tested line-up of events over the three days, with the grass-track forming the centrepiece — events start every day from 12 noon.

Other competitive events will include a madison cyclocross and, especially for the under-17s, there will be the ever-popular children’s duathlon, and for the under-16s, the Go-Ride Skilful Riding.

On the touring front, Cyclists Touring Club (CTC) Suffolk will be organising 50, 100, 161, 200 and 300km audax rides on the Saturday.

For those that want something more relaxing, Mildenhall Cycling Club will have their range of touring leaflets, offering a variety of scenery and varying distances.

Other attractions will include the ever-popular cycle jumble and quiz nights, trade stands and children’s activities.

As well being able to download the booking forms from www.mildenhallrally.org.uk, the site also provides online booking facilities.

For those that prefer a bit more comfort, the club will once again be providing their accommodation list with details of local places to stay.

The recent surfacing of the bridleway between Mildenhall and West Row will make it much safer for all rally-goers as it will mean they can avoid using the road alternative.
