For Stephen Pearson, Oulton Park beckoned last weekend as the Cheshire circuit saw MSVR provide two rounds of the Toyo Tyres Racing Saloon Series, writes Arthur Debenham
The Chedburgh-based team have been looking for more power from the BMW E36 M3, and to this end the car had been on the rolling road at BM Sport in Kent.
This seemed to be a successful move and during qualifying, Pearson achieved P4 for his first race.
When I say that all the top four were covered by less than one second, you realise that he was now on equal power with his main competitors.
During the first race, an improvement to a third-place finish not only provided a podium position, but also P3 for the race two grid.
Like race one, another podium was the end result, with another third position being held throughout.
The next round of the series is late August, and in the coming weeks, Pearson intends to seek more power, plus perhaps take in a round of the Kumho Tyres BMW Championship.
If the meeting at Oulton ran in a conventional manner, over in Belgium things were somewhat different.
For Stephen Glasswell, the Spa-Francorchamps circuit is one of his favourites, and an annual visit is always awaited with thoughts of a pleasant weekend.
On this occasion, Saturday provided them with a wet circuit, and for Glasswell, a distinct feeling of being unwell.
He was able to take in two races, which were part of the Dutch Monoposto Series in his Reynard FF2000.
Qualifying went fairly well and for race one he claimed P9 plus third-fastest of the UK visitors.
Rolling starts are used for these races, and for race one on a wet track it was just chaos.
It seemed that the pace car went out to look at track conditions, this being some minutes before the intended start time.
One competitor thought it was the start and followed behind.
Others then followed, one quickly throwing an umbrella out of his car!
Amid all the confusion, Glasswell took to the track and the race actually started, the result for the Great Britain based driver, being ninth overall and third UK driver.
Still feeling anything but well, he took in Sunday’s race for which he had put the Reynard into P15.
At least conditions today would be dry, and with the start procedure now in a more organised mode, he went on to improve to take 11th overall, and again third of the Brits.
Even the journey home had its moments, including a one-and-a-half hour queue for the Dartford crossing due to a closed tunnel.
