WEST Suffolk Athletics Club travelled to the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, to compete in the 2012 Anglian Schools Cross Country Championships.

Teams of 12 representing Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire, Northants and Lincolnshire contested each of the age groups.

Nella Walters, in the minor girls’ race, continued her superb season claiming first place while Megan Newton also raced well to secure fifth.

Close behind in eighth was new member Polly Peate, followed by Mikayela Sealby and Olivia Allum in 10th and 23rd respectively.

In the minor boys’ race, Thomas McCarthy worked hard for his 17th-place finish while Jess Walters battled the conditions to 31st.

Sophie Tooley had to produce a dramatic last-gasp effort in the junior girls’ race, battling from third with 200 metres left to take victory, with Holly Davies not far adrift in fourth.

There was differing emotions in the junior boys’ race as Ben Eames would have been pleased with eighth overall, but Jacob Freeborough was below his best in 54th overall.

In the inter boys’ race, Cameron McKie improved on his performance at the South of England Championships the previous weekend, finishing fifth, while Michael Bartram and Seb Anthony raced to eighth and 18th respectively.

Justine Anthony looks to be hitting form as she secured 16th place in senior girls’ race as Katie Duncan, in her first cross country season since joining the squad, claimed 18th.

Simon Dawson continues to improve on his comeback from injury and finished strongly for 11th while Mac Delo did not run at the event.

Adam Cripps suffered a twisted ankle during the race, but limped home at the back of the field as Suffolk picked up their fourth team win. Overall, Suffolk were overwhelming winners of the county team competition.
