Mildenhall will welcome thousands of cyclists and cycling fans from across the country this weekend for a huge annual sporting event.
The 2013 Mildenhall Cycling Rally takes place from today until Monday, August 26, on the Sheldrick Way site of Mildenhall College, with the local playing fields of the college becoming home to 400 caravan and camping pitches.
The grass track cycling takes centre stage with national titles up for grabs in some events while other events provide great opportunities for people of all ages to give cycling a try.
Among the events are the Madison cyclocross, children’s duathlon and the national grass track 800 metres.
Cyclists Touring Club Suffolk (CTC) are providing audax rides over distances of 57, 100, 200 and 300 kilometres, while Mildenhall Cycling Club is offering a range of touring leaflets of the local area and a cycling jumble.
Olympic champions including Victoria Pendleton CBE, Laura Trott OBE and Nicole Cooke OBE have visited in the past, competing in events before going on to all claim Olympic gold medals.
A survey conducted by Mildenhall Cycling Club and Forest Heath District Council at last year’s rally revealed nearly a quarter of a million pounds is put into the local economy every year.
