Great Whelnetham’s Alan Macpherson has overcome his most daunting challenge to date by conquering the Ultraman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii.

The 39-year-old, who suffers from Crohn’s disease, battled the three-day, 320-mile course, which consists of a 6.2-mile swim, 261.4-mile bike ride and 52.4-mile run, to clinch 18th overall and 13th in his group, in a time of 28 hours 53 minutes and 54 seconds, just over six hours behind eventual winner Alexandre Ribeiro.

A total of 35 invited competitors took on the challenge, with eight failing to finish the event, which is considered one of the toughest in sport.
