CULFORD Sports and Tennis Centre claimed a trio of winners when it hosted the 85th Bury and West Suffolk Tennis Tournament.

Kareem Shah, Alana Martin and Martha Hoare all secured titles in their respective events, as nearly 200 players made the trip to compete in the six-day event.

The 12-and-under boys’ singles event saw second seed Shah drop just four games in his first three matches, before recording a thrilling 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 champions’ tie-break victory over top seed Samuel Clark.

Martin gained success in the 18-and-under girls’ doubles where she teamed up with Pippa Scotcher (Hills Road) to beat Hetty Gittus (Risbygate Tennis Club) and Abi Stephenson (Medbourne) 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.

The village club was guaranteed victory in the 12-and-under girls’ doubles event where only two pairs entered and it was Martha Hoare and partner Alexandra Stanford (Benenden School) who got the better of Culford duo Brooke Adams and Kitty Hoare 4-6, 6-2, 10-8

Top seeds David Anthony Hall and William Hall lost in the final of the men’s doubles while Flora Hill and partner George Kizis (Risbygate Tennis Club) also had to settle for a runners-up spot in the 18-and-under mixed doubles.

Another Culford-Risbygate duo, Jack Evans and Finn Milbank, suffered the same fate as they lost in the 12-and-under boys’ doubles final.

Risbygate endured further final heartbreak in the boys’ doubles with Thomas Collender and Peter Whisenant (16-and-under) and Ronan Campbell and Dylan Evans (14-and-under) both falling at the final hurdle.

Ipswich Sports Club’s Henry Arrell was the star of the show as he impressively took victory in both the men’s and 18-and-under boys’ singles events.

Tournament chairman Susan Glasswell hailed the event a huge success and she was delighted with the turnout in the midst of Olympic fever.

“There was an excellent standard of tennis and there were a lot of people from different parts of the region – we had players from Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex,” she said.

“LTA East did comment how good our numbers were, despite the Olympics – they said we did very well to get just under 200 people.

“All in all, it was a very successful week.”

She added: “I would like to issue a huge thank you to our sponsors Glasswells, Culford School, Ensors and the Bury Free Press.”
