Alicia Gallagher has earned herself a scholarship to play basketball in America after being named Barking’s player of the year.

After impressing this season, the former St Benedict’s schoolgirl can look forward to testing her skills in the USA in the NJCAA Division One for Lamar Community College, in Colarado.

It caps a steady rise to prominence in the sport for the Barking Abbey Basketball Academy youngster, who has made the England basketball squad for the previous three years, with her side finishing as runners-up at the national play-offs in Manchester this year, losing out narrowly to Sheffield Hatters.

Her other team, Eastside Eagles, also made the play-offs for the second year running.
