ST EDMUNDSBURY Riding Club (SERC) have qualified once again for the South Essex Insurance Brokers Quadrille final, being held at Olympia, London, on Saturday, December 17.

A Quadrille performance involves a team of four members dressed in costumes carrying out several different moves accompanied by music in an arena.

The SERC team, consisting of Linda Price, Siobhan Gilligan, Caroline Paine and Karen Paine were one of the four teams out of nine to impress judges Karen Barker, Stephanie Croxford and Karl Ude Martinez at Aintree Equestrian Centre in Liverpool earlier this month.

With the help of trainer Gail Wynne Rogerson, they are hoping to improve on SERC’s fourth-place result at Olympia last year.

The return trip from London in 2010 inspired the theme of costume for this year’s competition.

On the way home, lorry driver Phil Scott, who helped them transport their equipment to and from the event, informed the team about his involvement in the Royal British Legion’s (RBL) 90th anniversary.

The team decided to base their display on the RBL to raise awareness for the charity.

They named their performance ‘Shoulder to Shoulder’ after the RBL’s motto and dressed as Chelsea Pensioners.

Costume maker Linda Price has designed the outfits for 12 years and this is her first year where she is riding and creating the costumes for both horse and rider.

The costume consists of red jackets with poppy wreaths around the horses’ necks.

“We are hoping that our theme of the RBL’s 90th anniversary will have the wow factor,” said Price.

Adrienne Wakeling, country manager for Suffolk RBL, added: “We are grateful that SERC Quadrille Team has taken on this innovative project to help celebrate our 90th anniversary.

“Our Poppy Appeal this year is about raising funds to help our battle-wounded back to recovery and long filling futures.”

SERC Quadrille Team are holding a dance and jive evening at the British Sugar Social Club on Saturday, November 19, at 7.30pm, in aid of the RBL.
