SAINT Edmund Pacers retained their Suffolk Winter Cross Country League title, following the fifth and final meeting at Haughley Park, Stowmarket, on Sunday.

The Pacers have again been in dominant form this season, and had already built up a lead of more than 200 points going into the final event.

Jo Coates again proved too strong for the opposition in the ladies’ race, held over two laps of the park, equating to just over five miles.

Coates was a comfortable winner, and was supported in the scoring team by Claire Hoblyn (eighth lady) and Cath Jeffrey (ninth lady).

For the men, long distance specialist Tom Kingsnorth was first home for the Pacers in fifth spot. Kingsnorth had finished second at the previous weekend’s Tarply Bury 20-mile road race.

Also in the Pacers’ scoring team were Glenn Douglas (10th), Kevin Vaughan (12th), Simon Phillips (22nd), Chris Cooke (23rd), Robert Smailes (28th) and Stephen Hatten (46th).

The other Pacers finishers in the senior race were: 66 Dave Vaughan, 100 Stephen Williams, 101 Peter Bird, 103 Chris Cook, 108 Maire O’Brien, 110 Emily Gooderham, 125 Claire Taylor, 130 Karen Page and 148 Eloise Calver.

The Pacers finished on top of the men’s and ladies’ team standings, as well as the combined.

The junior girls have enjoyed a good season in the league and they again featured highly at Haughley Park.

Emma Watts finished 21st overall, just ahead of Emly Strickland (27th) and Alice Maguire (32nd).

Matthew Le Poidevin, becoming stronger with every race after an injury lay-off, finished strongly to take fifth spot in the junior boys’ one-lap race.

Matthew Nichols was 10th in the same race.

Elsewhere, the Bury-based Pacers also had a good showing at the wet and windy Wymondham 20-mile road race, held in Norfolk.

They were represented by, 29 Mike Greener 2.21.36; 45 John Greener 2.25.30; 55 Andy Pearce 2.29.57; 108 Robert Hughes 2.42.53; 112 Steve Le Poidevin 2.43.28; 114 Ian Gooderham 2.44.38; 133 Mark Watts 2.47.46; 170 Dawn Marshall 2.58.26; 194 Phil Brown 3.06.46 and 237 Neil Anthony 3.34.51.
