Bury St Edmunds Golf Club’s Stenson squad overcame a strong and experienced Aldeburgh team at home, to move into the third round of the Stenson Shield with a resounding 7½ to 4½ victory on Saturday.

Having led 3-1 at lunch following the foursomes matchplay competition, the team progressed into round three by winning the afternoon singles matchplay session, 4½ to 2½.

Bury had to find a deep resolve to beat the experienced Aldeburgh.

With a play-off looking a likely outcome following defeats in the first three singles matches, the back end order secured victory for the club as they were undefeated in all remaining games.

Morning foursomes results (Bury first): Trevor Titcombe and James Scott beat John Wybar and Andy Edmonds 1up; Stephen Dufetty and Ben Coleman beat Roger Taylor and Robert Palmer 1up; Matt Fordham and Dan Smailes lost to James Keeley and Will Morecambe 4&2; Graham Sykes and Malcolm Wyer beat David Cargill and Charlie Robson 5&3.

Afternoon Singles (Bury first): Ben Coleman lost to James Keeley 4&3; Matt Fordham lost to John Wybar 2&1; Jack Nicolson lost to Andy Edmonds 6&5; James Scott beat Will Morecambe 1up; Jason Sewell beat Robert Palmer 1up; Dan Smailes beat Charlie Robson 8&7; Malcolm Wyer beat David Cargill 6&4; Trevor Titcombe v Roger Taylor match halved.

Felixstowe Ferry Golf Club will host Bury St Edmunds in round three on July 11.

n In the Men’s Baskett Trophy final 4BBB event, Terry Hamill and David Matter defeated Roger Nicholson and Chris Whyatt, 1up.

The match was all square after nine holes thanks to birdies at the eighth from Whyatt after a fantastic fairway bunker shot to two feet.

The pair followed this with another at the ninth before Matter won the 10th to put them 1up.

Hamill and Matter went 2up after 15, but lost 16 to go back to 1. They halved 17&18.

n Bury Ladies played in a divisional match, The Weston 2015, away to Gorleston, on Sunday, Bury winning 3-2.
