Barrie carries Thetford’s hopes in televised event

Barrie Trainor, who teaches at Thetford Golf Club, will have the Norfolk and Suffolk golfing community willing him on when he tees off at the BMW PGA Championship in Surrey for his second round today (10.55am).

The 32-year-old Northern Irishman, who swapped the glamour of the European Tour for coaching in the tranquillity of the Norfolk and Suffolk countryside at Cornard Tye’s Old Joe’s and Thetford in January, hopes to be this year’s surprise package at the Wentworth Club.

Trainor is playing the BBC-televised event at Virginia Water for only the second time, having not made the weekend’s final two rounds after a second round of 80 left him seven over par following a promising opening round of 70 last year.

The county’s only qualifier for the European Tour’s €4,750,000 showpiece event booked his place by finishing seventh at Titleist PGA Play-Offs in Turkey last December and played his first round at Virginia Water yesterday.
