Asker takes second overall in juniors’ race

West Suffolk Wheeler Sam Asker finished second overall in the under-16 race at the latest 5x3 Mountain Bike Series race, held in Shouldham, Warren, Norfolk, on Sunday.

Asker completed four laps in one hour 31 minutes 53 seconds, finishing ahead of teammates Robin Lines, Rhys Holland-Jones and newcomer Matt Asker in eighth, ninth and 10th.

In the senior race, Paul Watson was 18th with six laps in 1.25.45, while Richard Holland-Jones was 46th with four laps in 1.39.53.

n Darren Baker tackled the extremely tough 77km enduro cyclocross course in Duncton, West Sussex, on Sunday, finished with a bronze standard in the men over-50 age category.

With gradients topping out at 14 per cent, Baker finished in a time of four hours 41 minutes — six minutes quicker than the previous year’s effort over a shorter course and just 10 minutes shy of the silver standard.

So tough was the course, he spent 1.34km climbing during the event.

n Paul Rooke finished 13th in a time of 54 minutes 14 seconds as he and three fellow Wheelers took on the 35km Mad March Hilly Time Trial, organised by Cycle Club Sudbury, on Sunday.

Taking in Great Waldingfield, Newton Green, Monks Eleigh and Lavenham, Malcolm Borg (42nd, 1.00.59) was next, followed by Gerry Barton (54th, 1.08.33), but Henry Wood suffered a mechanical failure and did not finish.
